Canonical dentistry sustains that oral problems do not affect the rest of the body. But numerous recent studies revealed that inflammation, infections, and toxicities in the mouth from root canals, cavities with amalgam fillings, and periodontal disease can have severe impacts on the overall health of the body, contributing to diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and dementia.
In contrast, holistic dentistry, also known as biological dentistry, takes a different integration approach. Holistic dentists perform and teach prevention and employ natural remedies to treat oral health issues. They use non-toxic restorative materials that are biocompatible with the body and the environment. Holistic dentistry understands the body-mouth connection and applies it to all dental care and treatments.
Traditional dentistry, also known as standard dentistry, focuses on cleaning teeth, filling cavities, and repairing damaged teeth, usually with amalgam or composite materials containing toxins like mercury, nickel, and other heavy metals. Moreover, traditional dentists perform dental surgeries, primarily for teeth, gum, and jaw issues. They prescribe painkillers, antibiotics, and other specialized medications. Although traditional dentistry is necessary for addressing acute problems, it does not have a systemic approach to the patient’s overall health and the environment.

In traditional dentistry, mercury amalgam is frequently used, despite its proven negative effects on overall health after constant exposure. Other toxic materials that are used include fluoride, which has negative effects if ingested in large amounts, and nickel, which can cause allergic reactions, corrosion, and staining. On the other hand, holistic dentistry uses biocompatible materials that do not contain any toxic substances. These materials are safe for the body and help in creating a healthier oral environment. Furthermore, holistic dentistry is against the use of fluoride and believes that it should not be used in any dental procedures.

Based on my experience after giving up on performing root canals almost four years ago, is that holistic dentistry is not only the right direction for the sake of patient’s overall health but for the dentist’s health as well. According to the American Dental Association, the number one occupation for suicide is dentistry. The burnout comes from very real toxic exposures to the dentist’s body, including but not limited to mercury, known to cause neurological issues, and the aggressive nature of the chemicals used to disinfect the oral cavity such as glutaraldehyde, a known carcinogen which also causes asthma and other respiratory problems. Being at the chairside and making a difference in a patient’s life is what makes dentistry a rewarding profession. Over time these toxicities build up for both the patient and the practitioner and the only reasonable solution is taking a less toxic, more holistic approach. In the case of the dentist’s burnout and the very high rate of suicide, it is clear that the only solution is to shift the direction of dentistry to a less toxic approach.
These studies and my own experience mold the future of dentistry and confirm that the future is a holistic one where dentists will work in concert with other health practitioners such as naturopaths or nutritionists. It is not enough to use biocompatible materials, we need to go deeper to the cause of the dental issue, whether it is nutritional deficiencies, an unhealthy microbiome or the external toxins seeping into the oral cavity through gum absorption. The preventative measures can be equally comprehensive and they can go a long way not only in maintaining a healthy, beautiful smile but in enhancing overall health.
With the mouth being the gateway to the body, what happens in the mouth has a direct impact on the rest of the body. There are a number of scientific studies which establish a direct link between oral health and systemic overall health. Giving up on root canals, which you can think of as dead unhealthy tooth toxins, is only the tip of the iceberg in addressing the connection between oral and overall health in the field of dentistry. Thinking about these toxins and the cavitations led me to understand the larger problem and the necessity to embrace a holistic approach not only in my practice but in overall dentistry.
